Written by: Sheila Philips and Taci BartschiHow has dating changed over the years? Dating has changed in many ways over the years. Dating in today's world mostly involves meeting someone online or through a dating app. Yes, some people still meet through friends or even at work but dating apps have taken a lot out of modern dating. In ancient times dating was not really a thing. In ancient Rome women did not really have a lot of authority over themselves or their lives. As the years passed dating and romance became more important. Men were vying for the love and attention of women that they found attractive. During this time, it was not exactly “dating” as we know today, but it was clear that dating was progressing over the years. Dating blossomed in the 1800s love and dating were just starting to become more accepted. During the 20’s dating became more thrilling. Alcohol became illegal and it became much more exciting. Young couples snuck off at night to underground speakeasys and both men and woman would carry concealed flasks. Speakeasys were super romantic, so they made a suitable place where couples could have fun together. The number of people who owned a car increased in the 1920’s, meaning young couples could hit the road for a night and take their dates somewhere new. So, dating in the 1920’s was super fun. Dating in the 1980’s became a lot more relaxed. After the sexual revolution of the 1960’s and 1970’s, the 1980’s was all about having fun dating. Dating involved dancing, having adventures, breaking rules, and even hooking up with no strings attached. Dating could be casual, something different from the past. The major change of dating over the years was the introduction of matchmaking services and the internet. Some students at Harvard created what was known as an operation match. They created this to make dating easier for younger people. But now in 2017 there are a bunch of dating apps. Some people think that this approach to dating works while other people do not. Courtships were still frequent in the 18Th century, but during this time woman became more powerful of their own love lives. As time went on, courtships became more fun, like today’s dating. They became a choice not an obligation. Marrying for money, power, or land was still important, the difference between the late 1700’s, 1800’s, and during the 1600’s, is that woman had more power and independence. Woman today have more independence today than ever. During World War II, the dating concept changed a lot. Where men were getting shipped off to war, woman were looking for a marriage that will last after the war. They wanted a husband that was strong, and that could provide for a family after the war. When the war was looming, overhead people were settling into relationships very quickly and thoughtfully. The real question is, has dating gotten better or worse over the years? Today we have more freedom, and we make up our own rules. We are allowed so many options with our romantic partners. But in 2017 this is what made dating difficult. There were so many questions. Like what does the other person want? Are they looking for something real? Dating today is crazy but that does not mean that you cannot find love.

Written By: Lizzie Cole An incentive is something that motivates or encourages someone to do something. Why don’t we have it at Preston High? While we were at the junior high, we had an opportunity to go to an incentive for getting good grades. If a student’s grades were high enough, then they would get to go. When we were at the incentive, we got to ski and snowboard with people from our school. But it wasn’t just kids. We got to see our teachers go down the mountain (which was cool). It was like we had the whole resort to ourselves. Some kids learned how to ski/snowboard for the first time. Some kids liked hanging out in the lodge. Others went down the mountain with their friends. It was a fun incentive for everyone. This year the junior high changed their incentive. Instead of going to Cherry Peak, they went to Beaver Mountain. The kids who didn’t want to ski but were still eligible went to the to the fun park. This sounds very fun and most of us want to have the same privilege of going to a very fun incentive. There was a time when the high school did have a ski incentive. The high school would do the same thing the junior high did: they would load up everyone who qualified and go to skiing. But instead of Cherry Peak, they went to Beaver. What incentive do we have now that motivates to do better? We don’t get any exciting trip to go on. Our incentive is this: when we get good grades, then we have a better chance in getting into a better college. It’s not as fun as going to Beaver and skiing, but it does affect our future, and our future is very important. Written by Riley Bodily & Addilee Carter
For years, many have wanted to wear hats to school. When they did, they got in trouble and would lose their hat. The no hat policy used to be in place to show respect. Now there is not as much of a problem with hats. We don’t take our hats off to show respect as much as we used to. It used to be that you would remove your hat in a building to show respect to your peers. If you were a man, you would take your hat off, or tip your hat as you passed a lady to show respect. In the world today we don’t do this because the standards and the “norm” is different than it used to be. We show respect in different ways now. These reasons are why it took so long for the hat policy to change, some still think taking hats off in buildings is a great way to show respect. In some cases, taking off your hat is necessary to better show respect, but usually not in school. We show respect in many new and different ways, especially in school, that the removing of hats is almost no longer necessary. The new hat policy is great. While teachers still have the right to ask us to take hats off, most, if not all, will allow students to wear hats in their classes. Hats can help many to express themselves better, it could also offer a source of control and comfort to some. Being allowed to wear hats also helps us to better ready ourselves for the real world and making the choice of when it’s appropriate to wear a hat. Instead of waiting for someone to tells us if we can wear them or not. We now also get to decide when a hat is acceptable or decide when it is necessary to remove it. The new hat policy was probably long overdue, but let’s be grateful that we can now wear hats to school. Written By: Ryder Olsen We have all had a bad hair day to the point where we can’t do anything with our hair but sadly we had to because we couldn’t wear hats, well now we can! The hat policy says that we can wear hats to school, but the teachers have the right to make a rule in their class that they can have hats. I think being able to wear hats is very cool cause I get lazy in the mornings and can't do anything with my hair and being able to put on a hat is way nice. I also feel like hats shouldn't be worn because they can become a very big distraction, you could be trying to write an essay, but you get sidetracked because you are playing with the rim of the hat. Being able to wear a hat is very nice because half the time I'm too lazy to get out of bed but by the time I do the bus is halfway down the road, but now if I'm late getting out of bed, I don’t have to worry about doing my hair because I now can wear hats! Hats are good and bad, they can go either way, but my opinion on the hat policy is that we should be able to wear them (which now we can) and that if they are becoming a big distraction then the teachers should have the right to say take it off and not put it on until class is over. Now imagen this, Its six fifty and the bus comes at seven your dressed and halfway ready to go get on the bus but you're still trying to do your hair, but now you don't have to worry about that because you can now just put on a hat and get on the bus and go about your day. Q & AWhere did you move here from?
He was living in Springville, Utah but teaching in Saratoga Springs. What sports did you play in high school or in college? He played baseball, ran cross country, played football and wrestled. He coached a girl's wrestling team and they ended up being 2x state champs. What do you like best about being the vice principal? Having a broader reach with the students, I meet and communicate with way more kids than I would as a teacher. Do you have a good relationship with the kids? It’s one of my top priorities but it’s difficult to balance relationships with discipline. What’s the hardest part about being the new vice principal? Prioritizing, deciding whether to give more time to the students or to the teachers. Do you like this job? Yeah, I do, but it’s super challenging, every day is different, and you never know what to expect. Do you feel like you’re accepted at PHS? So far, I need to prove that I am not here temporarily, I want to make an impact. Interesting fact? He used to be in a band from the ages of 17-19 and wrote close to 50 songs. He loves everybody. |
