Written By: Lizzie Cole An incentive is something that motivates or encourages someone to do something. Why don’t we have it at Preston High? While we were at the junior high, we had an opportunity to go to an incentive for getting good grades. If a student’s grades were high enough, then they would get to go. When we were at the incentive, we got to ski and snowboard with people from our school. But it wasn’t just kids. We got to see our teachers go down the mountain (which was cool). It was like we had the whole resort to ourselves. Some kids learned how to ski/snowboard for the first time. Some kids liked hanging out in the lodge. Others went down the mountain with their friends. It was a fun incentive for everyone. This year the junior high changed their incentive. Instead of going to Cherry Peak, they went to Beaver Mountain. The kids who didn’t want to ski but were still eligible went to the to the fun park. This sounds very fun and most of us want to have the same privilege of going to a very fun incentive. There was a time when the high school did have a ski incentive. The high school would do the same thing the junior high did: they would load up everyone who qualified and go to skiing. But instead of Cherry Peak, they went to Beaver. What incentive do we have now that motivates to do better? We don’t get any exciting trip to go on. Our incentive is this: when we get good grades, then we have a better chance in getting into a better college. It’s not as fun as going to Beaver and skiing, but it does affect our future, and our future is very important.

For years, many have wanted to wear hats to school. When they did, they got in trouble and would lose their hat. The no hat policy used to be in place to show respect. Now there is not as much of a problem with hats. We don’t take our hats off to show respect as much as we used to. It used to be that you would remove your hat in a building to show respect to your peers. If you were a man, you would take your hat off, or tip your hat as you passed a lady to show respect. In the world today we don’t do this because the standards and the “norm” is different than it used to be. We show respect in different ways now. These reasons are why it took so long for the hat policy to change, some still think taking hats off in buildings is a great way to show respect. In some cases, taking off your hat is necessary to better show respect, but usually not in school. We show respect in many new and different ways, especially in school, that the removing of hats is almost no longer necessary. The new hat policy is great. While teachers still have the right to ask us to take hats off, most, if not all, will allow students to wear hats in their classes. Hats can help many to express themselves better, it could also offer a source of control and comfort to some. Being allowed to wear hats also helps us to better ready ourselves for the real world and making the choice of when it’s appropriate to wear a hat. Instead of waiting for someone to tells us if we can wear them or not. We now also get to decide when a hat is acceptable or decide when it is necessary to remove it. The new hat policy was probably long overdue, but let’s be grateful that we can now wear hats to school. Written By: Ryder Olsen We have all had a bad hair day to the point where we can’t do anything with our hair but sadly we had to because we couldn’t wear hats, well now we can! The hat policy says that we can wear hats to school, but the teachers have the right to make a rule in their class that they can have hats. I think being able to wear hats is very cool cause I get lazy in the mornings and can't do anything with my hair and being able to put on a hat is way nice. I also feel like hats shouldn't be worn because they can become a very big distraction, you could be trying to write an essay, but you get sidetracked because you are playing with the rim of the hat. Being able to wear a hat is very nice because half the time I'm too lazy to get out of bed but by the time I do the bus is halfway down the road, but now if I'm late getting out of bed, I don’t have to worry about doing my hair because I now can wear hats! Hats are good and bad, they can go either way, but my opinion on the hat policy is that we should be able to wear them (which now we can) and that if they are becoming a big distraction then the teachers should have the right to say take it off and not put it on until class is over. Now imagen this, Its six fifty and the bus comes at seven your dressed and halfway ready to go get on the bus but you're still trying to do your hair, but now you don't have to worry about that because you can now just put on a hat and get on the bus and go about your day. |
