Written by: Sheila Philips and Taci BartschiHow has dating changed over the years? Dating has changed in many ways over the years. Dating in today's world mostly involves meeting someone online or through a dating app. Yes, some people still meet through friends or even at work but dating apps have taken a lot out of modern dating. In ancient times dating was not really a thing. In ancient Rome women did not really have a lot of authority over themselves or their lives. As the years passed dating and romance became more important. Men were vying for the love and attention of women that they found attractive. During this time, it was not exactly “dating” as we know today, but it was clear that dating was progressing over the years. Dating blossomed in the 1800s love and dating were just starting to become more accepted. During the 20’s dating became more thrilling. Alcohol became illegal and it became much more exciting. Young couples snuck off at night to underground speakeasys and both men and woman would carry concealed flasks. Speakeasys were super romantic, so they made a suitable place where couples could have fun together. The number of people who owned a car increased in the 1920’s, meaning young couples could hit the road for a night and take their dates somewhere new. So, dating in the 1920’s was super fun. Dating in the 1980’s became a lot more relaxed. After the sexual revolution of the 1960’s and 1970’s, the 1980’s was all about having fun dating. Dating involved dancing, having adventures, breaking rules, and even hooking up with no strings attached. Dating could be casual, something different from the past. The major change of dating over the years was the introduction of matchmaking services and the internet. Some students at Harvard created what was known as an operation match. They created this to make dating easier for younger people. But now in 2017 there are a bunch of dating apps. Some people think that this approach to dating works while other people do not. Courtships were still frequent in the 18Th century, but during this time woman became more powerful of their own love lives. As time went on, courtships became more fun, like today’s dating. They became a choice not an obligation. Marrying for money, power, or land was still important, the difference between the late 1700’s, 1800’s, and during the 1600’s, is that woman had more power and independence. Woman today have more independence today than ever. During World War II, the dating concept changed a lot. Where men were getting shipped off to war, woman were looking for a marriage that will last after the war. They wanted a husband that was strong, and that could provide for a family after the war. When the war was looming, overhead people were settling into relationships very quickly and thoughtfully. The real question is, has dating gotten better or worse over the years? Today we have more freedom, and we make up our own rules. We are allowed so many options with our romantic partners. But in 2017 this is what made dating difficult. There were so many questions. Like what does the other person want? Are they looking for something real? Dating today is crazy but that does not mean that you cannot find love.
